During its twenty-five-year history, the Bratislava in Motion Festival has constantly tried to cultivate the taste of the public and create opportunities for contact and getting to know contemporary dance even outside the classical spaces of theaters. We initiated the creation of site-specific projects that gave artists the opportunity to create and enliven the streets and squares or other public places of Bratislava.
As part of the festival's anniversary celebrations, we decided to approach three generations of Slovak creators, from the oldest to the youngest, for cooperation. When choosing, we took into account their artistic qualities and experience with this kind of projects. They could choose one of four locations. Each team created a separate project in the form of a performative format close to them with the task of using the genius loci and spatial layout of the selected location.
The creators made overlooked places and corners vibrate with movement and sound, found a way to connect with the space and its atmosphere, and combined the past with the present in the form of a contemporary artistic intervention. The addressed team leaders are distinctive artistic personalities, they have their own specific creative handwriting and a different movement vocabulary that distinguishes them from each other. This selection of artists by the author of the concept and dramaturg Miroslava Kovářová is also a kind of mini sample of the Slovak contemporary dance scene.
The project was supported from public sources by the Slovak Art Council, the Bratislava City Foundation and the Bratislava Self-governing Region.
Co-organizers of the event: Bratislava Cultural Information Center, Bratislava City Gallery, City Library.
